A fire broke out at a dog shelter in Lam Tei, Tuen Mun, leaving over 40 dogs displaced. An animal protection organization is calling for help from kind-hearted individuals to donate funds for rebuilding the shelter and provide emergency dog food.
The organization called Paws Guardian posted on Facebook that the affected dog shelter has been run by two elderly individuals for nearly 30 years, caring for stray dogs. At the time of the fire, there were over 40 dogs on the premises, most of whom are old and not in good health. Fortunately, all the dogs are safe, with only a few suffering minor skin injuries. Those in need of veterinary care have been arranged to be taken to the Paws Guardians Veterinary Centre.
According to the organization, the shelter has long lacked manpower and resources, with outdated facilities. The fire was caused by a short circuit in a second-hand refrigerator. The fire completely engulfed the shelter, reducing all belongings, including the roof and storage for dog food, to ashes, leaving the place in ruins. There is currently water supply, but no electricity.
They express that the facilities at the shelter have been completely destroyed. They hope that individuals can help to rebuild it, welcoming those familiar with plumbing, electrical work, insulation construction, and other related fields to provide planning advice.
They also hope for donations of second-hand items such as towels, blankets, winter supplies, yoga mats, rice cookers, refrigerators, washing machines, bed linens, storage cabinets, dining tables, chairs, and even feeding dishes, as those are also in short supply. They are looking to get quotes from companies that can help clear the debris and mud, hoping to quickly clean the area and begin rebuilding so that the more than 40 dogs can safely get through this cold winter.
