According to Singapore's Lianhe Zaobao, the rise in single and solo-living individuals in Japan has given birth to a growing trend: "Solo Christmas." From single-portion Christmas meals to solo holiday trips, and even Christmas cakes designed for one, the theme of celebrating alone is becoming increasingly fashionable.

In Yokohama, a hotel launched a Christmas afternoon tea designed specifically for solo diners this December. The offering, which included bite-sized cakes and sandwiches elegantly presented on a three-tier stand, was fully booked on the first day of advertising. Guests could enjoy fine pastries, sparkling wine, and tea in a serene setting. Some hotels even bundled the afternoon tea with an overnight stay, allowing single customers to indulge in luxurious solitude.

Food website Ozmall featured numerous restaurants catering to individuals wanting to enjoy Christmas on their own. In an interview, the website's editor noted that Japan's single consumers increasingly value spaces where they can savor alone time. Businesses have embraced this demand, with solo-themed Christmas services improving year by year.

Japan's Institute of Population and Social Security Research estimates that by 2035, the number of single individuals, including widowed persons, will exceed 48 million, nearly half the population. A report by the Hakuhodo Institute of Life and Living highlighted a growing positive attitude toward solitude, with many singles designing and enjoying time alone. This shift has spurred businesses to develop products and services tailored to solo living, such as single-serving cakes.

Travel agencies have also tapped into the solo Christmas market with single-person overseas travel packages. Hankyu Travel reported a 2.5-fold increase in sales of such packages, including a women-only European Christmas tour. The tour, limited to 20 participants and departing on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, sold out quickly after pre-sales began in the summer.
