110 mega events in 1H attract 550,000 visitors bringing about HK$2.4 bn in spending
The Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism, Rosanna Law, said at the Legislative Council (LegCo) meeting today (Dec. 11) that according to estimates, the mega events in the first half of the year 2024 attracted a total of about 550,000 visitors and brought about HK$2.4 billion in spending, with an economic value added of about HK$1.4 billion.
Law pointed out that there were a total of 110 events in this year's first half year events calendar, covering a wide range of areas. Among them, 31 (28%) were arts, culture and creativity, 14 (13%) were sports and competitions, 38 (34%) were conventions and exhibitions, 15 (14%) were financial services, economy and innovation and technology, and 12 (11%) were festivals and celebrations, performances and carnivals.
Law said that relevant government departments (including the Police and the Transport Department) will, based on the information provided by the organizer of the mega event and/or relevant bureaux or departments, and taking into account factors such as the nature and scale of the mega event, anticipate the situation and risk assessment, and formulate appropriate special crowd management and traffic measures, such as crowd diversion routes, road closures and traffic diversions, etc.
