The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has announced the winners of its prestigious 2024 Champions of the Earth award, recognizing exceptional contributions to tackling land degradation, drought, and desertification. Among the six recipients from China, Brazil, the US, Romania, India, and Egypt, Chinese scientist Lu Qi was honored in the Science and Innovation category, making him the first Chinese recipient in this category.
Lu is a chief scientist at the Chinese Academy of Forestry. His groundbreaking work includes building desert ecosystem research networks, fostering partnerships, and promoting multilateral cooperation to combat desertification, land degradation, and drought.
The Champions of the Earth award, UNEP's highest environmental honor, is presented annually to individuals, groups, and organizations that have made transformative impacts on the environment. Since its inception in 2005, the award has been granted to 122 laureates.
