HKUST introduces flexible remote work day and special leave system to foster employees' well-being
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has introduced a flexible remote work day and special leave system. Since October this year, HKUST staff can choose to work remotely for one day each week based on the nature of their work.
HKUST stated that since the COVID-19 pandemic, remote work has become increasingly common. The university recognizes the impact of technology on the modern work environment and has taken the lead in formally establishing a policy for flexible work locations, making it the first government-funded university to do so as part of its strategy to attract and retain outstanding talent.
Additionally, HKUST offers four special leave days each year to encourage staff participation in activities related to health, diversity, equal opportunities, or social services. This initiative aims to promote personal well-being and enhance team cohesion.
Since the implementation of this policy in November 2022, over 170 employees have participated in various volunteer activities, including visiting the elderly, beach clean-ups, and food conservation efforts.
HKUST plans to introduce more initiatives, such as tree planting and food waste recycling, to promote sustainable development and advance the university's net-zero emissions goals. The special leave is also intended to help employees achieve a better work-life balance and foster a culture centered on employee well-being.
