The State Council of China announced on Thursday (Dec. 5) the appointment and removal of key officials in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government.

Mable Chan has been appointed as the new Secretary for Transport and Logistics, replacing Lam Sai-hung.

Rosanna Law Shuk-pui has been appointed as the new Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism, replacing Kevin Yeung Yun-hung.

According to an official statement, the decisions were made in accordance with the HKSAR Basic Law and based on the nomination and recommendation of HKSAR Chief Executive John Lee.

Hong Kong Transport Panel Chairman Chan Han-pan expressed gratitude for Lam Sai-hung's contributions over the past two years, describing their collaboration as smooth and productive. He praised Lam as "very capable and helpful."

On Mable Chan's appointment, Chan Han-pan noted her extensive experience in transport policy. He acknowledged the heavy workload she would face, including developing Hong Kong as a global maritime hub, managing the Third Runway System, and other logistics-related challenges.

Chan Han-pan remarked that Mable Chan's leadership could bring "a fresh outlook" to the government and expressed hope that Hong Kong could "carve out a path" in transportation and logistics development. He also reaffirmed his committee's ongoing support for policies that benefit Hong Kong's public livelihood.

Executive Council Convenor Regina Ip welcomed the appointments of two young and energetic women as secretaries, praising their expertise and commitment to their respective policy areas.

Ip commended Rosanna Law Shuk-Pui for her innovative and proactive approach during her tenure as Commissioner for Transport and Director of Housing, citing her efforts to tackle issues such as "well-off tenants" in public housing. She emphasized that the new Secretary for Culture, Sports, and Tourism would play a crucial role in driving Hong Kong's sports and tourism development, which are major priorities for the government.

Ip also highlighted Mable Chan's effectiveness in handling railway-related matters, noting her familiarity with the Third Runway System and the logistics hub initiatives, which are expected to become key growth drivers for Hong Kong.

Lastly, Ip expressed gratitude to the outgoing officials, Kevin Yeung, and Lam Sai-hung, for their contributions during their terms in office.
