The Japan Meteorological Agency announced today (Dec. 3) that this year has experienced the hottest autumn in 126 years, resulting in the maple leaf viewing season being postponed to December.

The agency reported that autumn temperatures in Japan this year are 1.97 degrees Celsius higher than in previous years, making it the hottest autumn on record since 1898. From September to November, temperatures in Tokyo were 2.4 degrees higher than usual, 2.9 degrees higher in the central city of Nagoya, and 1.2 degrees higher in the northern city of Sapporo.

The agency indicated that the best time for viewing maple leaves in Tokyo is around Dec. 5, while in Osaka, it is around Dec. 9.
