John Lee: Ruling on Fanling Golf Course won't significantly affect public housing supply goal for next 10 years
Chief Executive John Lee stated on Tuesday (Dec. 3) that the recent court decision which invalidated the approval of an environmental assessment for constructing residential buildings on the Fanling golf course will not have a major impact on Hong Kong's public housing supply in the coming decade.
Following a ruling issued by the High Court yesterday, authorities have been directed to re-engage with the public regarding proposals to develop public housing on 9.5 hectares of the historic golf course.
Lee emphasized that while the overall housing targets for the next 10 years will remain unchanged, the court's decision will impact both the number of residences that can be constructed on the golf course and the timeline for completion. He highlighted the significant repercussions in terms of the quantity of public housing units, the housing density, and the delay in housing production, necessitating a comprehensive reassessment by the government.
The CE said that officials have secured land to produce more than 308,000 public housing units in the next 10 years.
"The change in relation to the public housing development on Fanling golf course should not pose a major change to the public housing production target," he said.
Lee said the government will conduct analyzes before deciding the way forward, including whether to launch an appeal.
