Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu proposed the "Study in Hong Kong" initiative in his Policy Address, aiming to establish Hong Kong as a global education hub. The Global University Presidents & Leaders Summit 2024 kicked off today (December 2) at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai.

Over 50 university presidents and representatives from Mainland China, the UK, the US, and Belt and Road countries are participating in panel discussions on topics such as knowledge globalization, biomedical innovation, and the green economy. Presidents from Hong Kong's nine universities will also lead discussions during the event.

Chief Executive John Lee and Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in Hong Kong, Zheng Yanxiong, attended the opening ceremony and delivered speeches.

Director Zheng Yanxiong highlighted three key principles for universities: "fostering virtue through education," "upholding internationalization," and "serving society." He emphasized that the Hong Kong SAR government remains committed to maintaining a stable and secure university environment while preserving academic freedom.

Zheng expressed hopes for deeper international collaboration among Hong Kong’s higher education institutions and stressed the importance of continuing to pursue university internationalization. He also underscored the need to build a globally interconnected higher education network.

Since Hong Kong's return to China, the SAR government, with strong support from the central government, has upheld the principles of university stability, autonomy, and academic freedom. The central government continues to back extensive international cooperation for Hong Kong's universities, enabling them to develop rapidly.

Zheng noted that several universities in Hong Kong have consistently ranked among the world's top 100 institutions, with their positions steadily improving. He reaffirmed the central government’s support for transforming Hong Kong and Macau into global hubs for top-tier talent.
