The Director of Health, Dr. Lam Man-kin, delivered a speech today (Dec. 1) at an event, stating that there are currently over 380,000 registered organ donors in Hong Kong. However, more than 2,000 patients are waiting for organ transplants each day, and the number of donors remains insufficient.
The authorities have set up organ donation registration stations in all 18 districts and are collaborating with various religious groups and media to produce promotional videos to communicate accurate concepts about organ donation to the public.
He urged citizens who wish to donate organs to express their intentions to their families and reminded those who filled out organ donation cards before 2008 to re-register to ensure that their information is updated in the computer system.
More than ten family members of organ transplant recipients, along with representatives from various healthcare groups, gathered this morning (Dec. 1) at Junk Bay Chinese Permanent Cemetery to pay tribute to 79 organ donors. The convener Dr. Chau Ka-foon stated that the organs they donated have saved over 230 patients.
