Stranded whale in Tai O died around midnight on Dec. 1
A whale was found stranded in the waters of Tai O yesterday (Nov. 30). A spokesperson from the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) stated today (Dec. 1) that a preliminary assessment by veterinarians from Ocean Park Hong Kong indicated that the whale was injured.
While anesthetizing the whale for further diagnosis, the veterinarians discovered that it was very weak. It ultimately died during the diagnostic procedures around midnight on Dec. 1.
AFCD personnel and veterinarians from Ocean Park will conduct an autopsy on the whale's body to investigate the cause of death.
Our reporter observed that three men and two women in uniforms left the location of the stranded whale at around 12:30 a.m. It is known that they are staff from the Animal Care Center at Ocean Park, but no details about the injured whale's condition were disclosed. The whale was being escorted by two boats, slowly towed towards the ocean.
