Putin signs law to cancel debt for new Russian military recruits for Ukraine war
Russian President Vladimir Putin has enacted a new law that forgives debt arrears for individuals who join the military to serve in Ukraine. According to details published on a government website, the legislation will cancel debts of up to 10 million roubles (approximately US$95,835) for recruits who sign a contract with the Defence Ministry and commit to at least one year of service starting from Dec. 1.
The law specifically applies to individuals who had debt collection proceedings initiated against them prior to Dec. 1. Analysts suggest the move is part of Russia's broader strategy to boost military enlistment, which has included offering significant financial incentives, in some cases far exceeding the average national salary, to attract recruits for the ongoing conflict.
