FM responses to comments made by individual countries regarding case of Jimmy Lai
Three judges unanimously ruled in July this year that Next Media's founder Jimmy Lai, known for his anti-China stance and efforts to destabilize Hong Kong, was convicted of two counts of conspiracy to collude with foreign powers and one count of conspiracy to publish seditious publications. The case was resumed today (Nov. 20) at the West Kowloon Magistrates' Courts (acting as the High Court).
Since the trial began, anti-Chinese organizations in the US and the West have continued to make various unsubstantiated allegations in an attempt to pressure the HKSAR government to release Lai before the trial.
According to CCTV News, on Nov. 20, a reporter asked about the comments made by individual countries regarding the case of Jimmy Lai at the regular press conference of the Foreign Ministry.
In this regard, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said, "Hong Kong is a society based on the rule of law. No one can engage in illegal activities under the banner of freedom and try to escape from the law. Lai is the main planner and participant of the anti-China and destabilizing Hong Kong, and is the agent and front-runner of the anti-China forces. The HKSAR government has been safeguarding national security in accordance with the Hong Kong Basic Law and Hong Kong's national security law, which is justified by law and reasonable, and is beyond reproach."
Lin pointed out that Hong Kong's judiciary exercises its judicial power independently in accordance with the law, with fair and impartial procedures and open and transparent trials.
"The central government of China firmly supports the HKSAR in safeguarding national security and punishing all kinds of activities that jeopardize national security in accordance with the law, and firmly opposes individual countries interfering in China's internal affairs and discrediting and destroying the rule of law in Hong Kong by means of the relevant judicial cases," Lin said.
