Photos | A special visit to Peru's market: John Lee hopes for increased import of Peruvian agricultural products
Chief Executive John Lee previously arrived in Peru on November 14, Hong Kong time, to represent Hong Kong, China, at the 2024 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meetings and related activities held in Lima.
On November 18, Lee posted on social media that to further understand Peruvian culture and the local way of life, he and his team took the opportunity during two lunch breaks to learn about the lifestyles and local specialties, hoping to assist Hong Kong in expanding its free trade agreement (FTA) network.
Lee mentioned that, in addition to trying Peruvian specialty sandwiches and purple corn juice with the ambassador of the Diplomatic Service of Peru, María Eugenia Chiozza Bruce de De Zela, at a restaurant, he also visited a market with Peruvian chef Adolfo Perret, where he saw many fruits and agricultural products not commonly found in Hong Kong, including Inca beans (pacae), egg fruits (lucuma), sweet passion fruits (granadilla), and purple corn.
Lee stated that after signing the free trade agreement with Peru, he hoped to see more Peruvian specialty agricultural products imported into Hong Kong. He noted that local businesspeople are excited about the business opportunities created by the partnership between Hong Kong and Peru.
In 2023, Hong Kong imported goods worth HK$1.69 billion from Peru, primarily consisting of vegetables and fruits.
Lee also emphasized that Hong Kong has been committed to expanding its FTA network, aiming to allow local goods and services to enter international markets under better conditions. The FTA between Hong Kong and Peru will provide a more transparent and favorable platform for bilateral trade, helping Hong Kong businesses and Peruvian investors expand their operations.
