6G era is coming! China to start research on 6G tech standard in June 2025
China is set to begin research on 6G technology standards in June 2025, according to Wang Zhiqin, Head of the China 6G Promotion Group and Vice President of the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology.
Wang stated that the technical research phase is expected to be completed by 2027, with the first version of the 6G standard to be finalized by March 2029.
He noted that this year, relevant departments have conducted tests on wireless and network technologies, including the integration of sensing and communication, AI with telecommunications, and the convergence of space and terrestrial networks. For network technologies, this year marked the first comprehensive trial of unified design and scheduling of multiple resources.
Looking ahead, Wang emphasized that 6G will go beyond traditional communications to create a network integrating sensing, data, AI, and computing.
Regarding the impact of 6G on daily life, he explained that 6G will introduce more intelligent agents, enhancing human-to-human and human-to-machine connectivity. In the future, robots may play key roles in manufacturing, home care, and education, offering new forms of service that could be realized in the near future.
China is currently accelerating the integration and development of emerging industries such as digital twins and robotics to build a strong foundation for 6G applications. Meanwhile, global partners in Europe, the US, Japan, South Korea, and India are also collaborating on the development of 6G standards through the 3GPP.
