Philippines needs peace, not mid-range missiles, says Chinese Foreign Ministry
On Nov. 14, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian responded to a reporter's question about the Philippines' attempt to purchase the Typhon mid-range missile launch system during a regular press briefing, stressing that what the region needs is peace and prosperity, and that there is no need for mid-range missiles and confrontation.
Lin reiterated China's firm opposition to the deployment of US mid-range missiles in the Philippines, a stance that China has articulated on multiple occasions. He emphasized that the introduction of such strategic and offensive weapons by the Philippines, in cooperation with external forces, would escalate regional tensions, provoke geopolitical confrontation, and trigger an arms race. He described the move as a provocative and dangerous action that is irresponsible to the security of the Philippines, its people, and Southeast Asian nations at large.
What the region needs is peace and prosperity, not mid-range missiles and confrontation, Lin stated. He called on the Philippines to correct its mistake at the earliest opportunity and to swiftly withdraw the Typhon missile system as previously promised, warning against further escalation.
