
The city government of Osaka, Japan, announced today (Nov. 12) that smoking on the roadside will be completely banned from January 27, 2025 onwards.
The purpose of the ordinance is to maintain the quality of the environment and improve the cityscape in preparation for the World Expo 2025. Currently, Osaka City has banned roadside smoking in Umeda and Midosuji, and offenders will be fined 1,000 yen (about HK$51), according to the local government.
According to the Japanese media, Osaka Mayor Hideyuki Yokoyama said that the new system will be implemented in the entire city of Osaka. In addition, the city government has also promised to set up smoking areas in various parts of the city to make it easier for the public to comply with the rules.
