HK's rule of law provides best business environment, says Secretary for Justice
Themed "Hong Kong Common Law System: World-Class Springboard to China and Beyond", Hong Kong Legal Week 2024 concluded today (Nov. 8). The five-day annual flagship event of the legal sector and the Department of Justice (DoJ) was attended by a total of about 2,500 participants in person and online from nearly 50 jurisdictions, demonstrating Hong Kong's status as the leading international legal and dispute resolution services center in the Asia-Pacific region.
The Secretary for Justice, Mr. Paul Lam Ting-kwok, stressed today in his closing remarks at the Hong Kong Legal Week 2024 that the rule of law is the cornerstone of the city's business environment. He noted that HK is the only region in China practicing common law and is bilingual, which offers significant advantages for businesses seeking opportunities in both HK and the Mainland. As President Xi Jinping has highlighted, the rule of law is the best business environment.
Lam also said that the 2024 Policy Address, which seeks to balance reform and innovation while preserving the common law system, will ensure the continued effective role of common law.
Furthermore, Lam pointed out that the Belt and Road Initiative has entered its second decade this year. The ultimate goal of the initiative is to establish a global community through increased cooperation. HK will continue to strengthen its collaboration with the Mainland's legal professionals, he added.
