Ho Kai-ming, Under Secretary for Labour and Welfare stated today (the 4th) that since the introduction of various pro-natal measures, there were 11,807 births from June to September this year, representing a 9.8% increase compared to the same period last year. However, it is not yet possible to determine whether the rise in the birth rate is directly related to these measures.
Legislative Council member Bill Tang Ka-piu suggested that baby photos be displayed in all government offices to create an encouraging atmosphere for childbirth. Election Committee member Doreen Kong Yuk-foon proposed promoting flexibility in parental leave for small and medium-sized enterprises.
In response, Ho indicated that the government would adopt a soft approach to encourage businesses to implement family-friendly measures and would consider extending maternity leave.
He supported the suggestion of displaying baby photos and revealed that he himself has baby photos posted in his office.
