Environment protection first: Six-month adaptation period of plastic-free campaign ends today
The new regulation on disposable plastic products came into effect on April 22 this year.The six-month adaptation period ends today (Oct. 21).
The Deputy Director of Environmental Protection Department (EPD) described the implementation of the new legislation as smooth and orderly, and the effect of plastic-free and reducing waste is very remarkable.
About 80% of the customers in chain restaurants have chosen not to need take-away tableware, and about 30% of restaurants even no longer provide any take-away tableware. It is estimated that the industry has reduced the use of more than 30 million sets of disposable tableware since the implementation of the single-use plastic ban, accordingto the Deputy Director of EPD.
"Plastic-free campaign in the hotel industry has been at the forefront of the world, with reducing disposable plastic products by about 80% in the past six months; At the retail level, disposable umbrella bags have been stopped in the market, and few people use fluorescent sticks and party hats during festivals, reflecting that the plastic-free culture is slowly taking shape."
As for when to implement the second phase of regulation on disposable plastic products, the authorities will decide when to implement it again depending on social acceptance, the availability of suitable substitutes, and the international trend of plastic-free.
There is no timetable of implementation at present,the Deputy Director of EPD added.
