Policy Address 2024 | Lo Chung-mau: Hepatitis B screening program to target high-risk groups
Dr. Lo Chung-mau, Secretary for Health, stated during a speech at an event focused on hepatitis B that the new policy address proposes the implementation of hepatitis B screening targeting high-risk groups, such as family members of hepatitis B patients.
The initiative will collaborate with community health centers and family doctors, using strategic procurement measures to fund screenings for high-risk populations. He said that detailed plans will be announced soon.
Dr. Lo pointed out that the government has been actively working on hepatitis B prevention since the 1980s, and the current younger generation under 35 has been effectively protected, with only 0.3% being hepatitis B carriers. However, among the 35 to 54 age group, approximately 8.4% are carriers, which should be paid great attention to.
He also mentioned that there are still 410,000 hepatitis B carriers in Hong Kong, with 40% unaware of their condition and 70% not undergoing regular check-ups.
