According to government figures released on Wednesday, Japan saw 2,872,200 international visitors in September, the most ever for the month, as tourists continue to pour in, mostly helped by a weakening yen.

The figure marked a 31.5 percent rise compared to the same month last year and a 26.4 percent increase compared to September 2019 before the pandemic, the Japan National Tourism Organization said in a report.

Increased flights to Japan, along with more outbound travelers during public holidays in neighboring countries such as South Korea and China contributed to the surge.

For eight consecutive months, Japan has set record highs for foreign visitor arrivals as the country introduced a series of initiatives to attract inbound visitors and boost tourism across the country.

The overall number of international visitors from January to September was 26,880,200, which was more than the 25,066,350 reported for the entire previous year.

In the meantime, there were 1,212,600 Japanese tourists departing the country in September, up 20.7% over the previous year.
