During his speech at the Hong Kong, China's Paris 2024 Olympic Team Celebration Raceday, Chief Secretary for Administration Eric Chan stated that the Special Administrative Region (SAR) Government has consistently dedicated resources to support sports development in Hong Kong.
Chan indicated that this includes providing stable financial resources through the Elite Athletes Development Fund to the Hong Kong Sports Institute (HKSI), supporting the training needs of approximately 1,500 athletes. For the fiscal year 2024-2025, the SAR Government's allocation to the Sports Institute has reached HK$940 million, a more than 40% increase from five years ago, demonstrating a strong commitment to advancing sports development.
Chan highlighted that, besides government efforts, support from all sectors for sports development is crucial. The Hong Kong Jockey Club has significantly supported local sports development, establishing a three-year Jockey Club Athlete Incentive Awards Scheme to encourage and recognize athletes who achieve excellence in major competitions. The reward amounts for this Olympic cycle have increased by 20% compared to the previous cycle.
Chan also mentioned that next year, we will see the 15th National Games, the 12th National Games for Persons with Disabilities, and the 9th Special Olympics National Games, with the Kai Tak Sports Park set to open. He expressed hope that all sectors of society would continue to strongly support sports development in Hong Kong.
