Chinapedia | Shaanxi History Museum: A dream back to Chinese dynasties
As one of the most important cradles for the origin of the Chinese nation where 14 Chinese historical dynasties founded their capitals and flourished, Shaanxi Province possesses a wide range of hallmarks of the Chinese civilization. Located in Yanta District, Xi'an (Shaanxi's capital), the Shaanxi History Museum is the art pavilion that curates and exhibits Shannxi's historical culture and ancient Chinese civilization.
The Museum is the first large-scale modern national museum in China and houses over 370,000 items. For tourists who are seeking a profound understanding of Chinese history, the Shannxi History Museum is a can't-miss for the trip to Xi'an.
Important Collections
The Empress Jade Seal
This seal was made of Hetian jade with a monster-shaped protrusion as a knob. The seal was inscribed with four characters "Huang Hou Zhi Xi", which means the empress's seal. It was unearthed near the mausoleum of Emperor Gaozui's wife. The jade seal is one of the most important seals of the Western Han Dynasty that have ever been found.
Bronze Tiger-Shaped Tally of Du County
The tiger tally was designed to be split in half. The Emperor held the right half, while the governor or general in Du County held the other half. It was used exclusively to mobilize armies in ancient China. It was the symbol of highly centralized military leadership in the Qin Dynasty.
Entrance & Reservation
Although admission to the museum is free (Shaanxi History Museum and Qin Han Museum of the Shannxi History Museum), ticket reservations are required to control the visitor volume at the museum.
