On September 30, the General Administration of Customs of China announced via its official information platform that recently, customs officials at Guangzhou Baiyun Airport seized a traveler attempting to bring an excessive amount of currency into the country. Over US$1.8 million was confiscated, equivalent to more than 12.6 million RMB.
While supervising an incoming flight, customs officers noticed abnormal images of a traveler's luggage in the "nothing to declare" channel. The images revealed many bundled rectangular paper-like items suspected to be currency. Upon further inspection, officers found the traveler's suitcase packed with bundles of US$100 and US$50.
Reminder:
According to relevant laws and regulations, cash currency is classified as a restricted item for entry and exit. Travelers carrying cash exceeding 20,000 RMB or foreign currency equivalent to more than $5,000 must truthfully declare it to customs and choose the "declaration channel" for clearance.
