Shigeru Ishiba elected to become Japan's next prime minister
According to CCTV News, on the afternoon of Sept. 27 (Japan time), Shigeru Ishiba, former Defense Minister and party heavyweight, won the majority of votes in the second round of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) leadership election, securing his position as the party's new president.
In the second round of voting, a total of 414 votes were cast, with 409 valid ballots. Ishiba garnered 215 votes, winning the race.
The current prime minister of Japan, Fumio Kishida, will see his term as LDP president ends on Sept. 30. As per tradition, Ishiba will be officially appointed as prime minister in the extraordinary Diet session scheduled to be held on Oct. 1.
Shigeru Ishiba, 67, is running for the party leadership for the fifth time. He began his career in banking and has spent 38 years in politics, working across several key areas such as agriculture, national security, and regional revitalization.
He has previously served as LDP Secretary-General and Chairman of the Policy Research Council, earning a reputation as a "policy expert."
