Starting Oct. 1, the XRL sleeper trains operating between Beijing West, Shanghai Hongqiao, and Hong Kong West Kowloon will undergo a comprehensive quality upgrade. The upgrades will include the reduction of travel times, optimization of stop schedules, improvement of facilities, and enhancement of the overnight travel experience.

According to reports from mainland media, the newly developed Fuxing XRL sleeper trains will be introduced on the Beijing-Hong Kong and Shanghai-Hong Kong routes.

Train D909/910 from Beijing West to Hong Kong West Kowloon will be upgraded to G897/898, and Train D907/908 from Shanghai Hongqiao to Hong Kong West Kowloon will be upgraded to G899/900.

To meet the travel demand during the National Day holiday, an extra G898 train from Hong Kong West Kowloon to Beijing West will be added on Sept. 30. Trains between Beijing-Hong Kong and Shanghai-Hong Kong will run in both directions on Oct. 1 and 2, with continued bi-directional service on the busiest travel days— every Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays.

After the upgrades, the maximum operating speed of the XRL sleeper trains between Beijing-Hong Kong and Shanghai-Hong Kong will increase from 250 km/h to 300 km/h, significantly reducing travel times.

For instance, the upgraded G897 train will depart from Beijing West at 20:13 p.m. and arrive at Hong Kong West Kowloon at 7:45 a.m. the next day, enabling it to arrive 1 hour and 2 minutes earlier than currently.

Tickets for the upgraded Fuxing intelligent XRL sleeper trains went on sale on Sept. 25.
