Expert analysis: Role of China in promoting global peace and sustainable development
Jake Sullivan, U.S. National Security Advisor, will visit China from the 27th to the 29th for a new round of U.S.-China strategic communications.
Professor Zhu Feng, Executive Dean of the School of International Relations at Nanjing University, pointed out in an interview that although the Biden administration has limited time, U.S.-China relations still need to be guided by the important consensus reached during high-level diplomatic engagements between the two countries.
Zhu said it is essential to continue institutionalizing and mechanizing high-level dialogues, particularly to enhance communication on issues currently affecting U.S.-China relations, including Taiwan. Given the complex international situation and various related issues, both countries must shoulder their responsibilities as major powers and strengthen dialogue and communication.
He noted that both U.S. political parties are expressing a so-called hardline stance toward China based on their political interests, claiming the ability to contain and overcome China completely. However, such actions driven by narrow domestic political interests are fundamentally destructive to today's U.S.-China relations, the well-being of both peoples, and the world's sustainable development.
The expert believes that Sullivan's visit is crucial for conveying positive energy to both nations through high-level dialogues in the security field.
Zhu stated that during this election year, while both parties must present a tough stance on China, the domestic issues in the U.S. far outweigh the so-called China issues that politicians are currently discussing. The current international landscape is chaotic, with significant negative impacts from conflicts like the Russia-Ukraine war and the Israel-Palestine conflict. However, this turbulence has nothing to do with China; rather, China is a vital positive force promoting sustainable development and peace in the world today. Sullivan's visit should lead the U.S. to recognize that a rising China will only bring more positive energy to the world.
