Raymond Siu announces installation of 615 CCTV cameras by year-end
Hong Kong Police Commissioner Raymond Siu stated in a radio program that the recent installation of 15 CCTV cameras in Mong Kok has quickly assisted in solving cases, including those involving imitation firearms and robbery. He mentioned that by the end of the year, an additional 615 CCTV cameras will be installed in crime hotspots and densely populated areas across all 18 districts, which will help with crowd control.
Raymond Siu emphasized that installing CCTV cameras complies with privacy laws and pointed out that London, with a population of 9 million, began installing CCTV cameras in the 1990s and now has over 800,000. He reiterated the need for Hong Kong to expedite this initiative to ensure a safe and secure environment.
When asked about recruiting police officers, Raymond Siu acknowledged the challenges faced, which are common across various sectors, but noted that the situation has improved. In the 2023/24 fiscal year, the number of applicants for police positions has increased by nearly 40%. He stated that the recruiting strategy will be regularly reviewed, and the hiring process will not be taken lightly.
Additionally, technology-related scams remain the most prevalent among various types of fraud, accounting for 70% of all fraud cases. The police have invested considerable resources to address this issue. Siu stressed that preventing fraud is not solely the responsibility of the police but also a collective societal responsibility, requiring participation from different stakeholders and the public.
Raymond Siu mentioned that victims of investment scams have collectively lost over 5.9 billion HKD, with scammers primarily attracting individuals of various ages and educational backgrounds through social media by promising high returns. The common tactic scammers use is offering initial "sweet deals." He provided an example of a woman who invested 900,000 HKD after earning 300,000 HKD in one day, only to later discover she had been scammed, reminding the public that they should not be greedy for easy gains.
