Thai authorities confirmed late on Thursday that five Chinese nationals were among nine people who died when a small plane crashed minutes after taking off from Bangkok's main airport.
The Associated Press news agency quoted an official from Thailand's Chachoengsao province as saying that the five were from Hong Kong. Media reports in Thailand say the dead included children aged 12 and 13, as well as three adults in their 40s. The other four victims were Thai nationals, including two pilots.
The five Chinese nationals' deaths have been confirmed by Thai authorities, according to the Chinese Embassy in Bangkok, which is still looking for more details.
The aircraft reportedly took off at 2:46 p.m. from Suvarnabhumi Airport, the largest airport in Bangkok. When the aircraft was about 35 kilometers southeast of the airport, 11 minutes later, air traffic control lost radio and radar contact with it.
Thai media said rescuers found no survivors at the crash site in a mangrove swamp in Chachoengsao province about 40 kilometres from the airport. Rescue teams continued their work into the night.
The Cessna Caravan C208B operated by the Thai Flying Service Company had been bound for the coastal province of Krabi.
