Ocean Park to arrange for original team to take care of new giant pandas

Lele. (DotDotNews)

The government announced earlier that the Central Government will send a new pair of giant pandas to Hong Kong. The Assistant Curator of the Zoological Operations Waterfront of Ocean Park said that the new giant pandas will undergo a food transition period when they change their environment.

In order to help the giant pandas to adapt as soon as possible, the Park will first send bamboo from Guangdong Province to Sichuan, so that they can get accustomed to the types of bamboo that they will be eating after they arrive at Hong Kong. The giant pandas will be fed with the bamboo from Sichuan after they come to Hong Kong to make the transition, she said.

In addition, she said that the Park will arrange for the original team to take care of the new giant pandas. Still, only one or two caregivers will be designated to teach the giant pandas some training behaviors, such as opening their mouths for veterinary inspection.

Yingying and Lele have been in Hong Kong for 17 years and have not given birth since they were two years old. She said that Ying Ying showed signs of estrus this spring, and the Park had allowed Yingying and Lele to mate. The Park provides a quieter place for the female pandas to rest and wait for news in summer every year.

She said that the Park will continue to monitor the situation of the female pandas in the future, and will communicate closely with the panda experts in Sichuan to exchange views.
