HKO: Chance of issuing tropical cyclone warning signal low unless Gaemi moves further west
According to the Hong Kong Observatory (HKO), Typhoon Gaemi is moving across the Taiwan Strait. It is expected to make landfall over the coast of Fujian this afternoon to tonight, and enter the inland areas of southeastern China, maintaining a distance of over 500 kilometers from Hong Kong.
The Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) reported that unless Gaemi adopts a more westerly track after making landfall over Fujian, its circulation will be relatively far from the Pearl River Estuary and the chance of issuing a tropical cyclone warning signal is relatively low. Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon over the northern part of the South China Sea will become more active today. Winds will be strong offshore, occasionally reaching gale force on high ground later today and at first tomorrow. Depending on the changes in local wind conditions, the Observatory will consider issuing the Strong Monsoon Signal.
The HKO also mentioned that under the influence of the outer subsiding air of Gaemi, it will still be very hot today and the temperatures will reach 35 degrees or above over parts of the territory. High temperatures may also trigger thundery showers later today. There will be more showers and a few squally thunderstorms over the coastal areas on Friday and during the weekend.
