EDB plans new weights for primary school assessments
The EDB (Education Bureau) recently announced that it is reviewing the composition of primary school internal assessments and plans to adjust the weight of each subject.
The proposal includes adding Physical Education, which would account for 2 points, with physical fitness assessment and school-based elements making up half of that.
The weight of Chinese, English, and Mathematics would be reduced from 9 points each to 8 points each. The total score of 38 points remains unchanged, with the changes expected to be implemented as early as the 2026/27 school year, according to sources.
The General Studies subject in primary schools will be split into Science and Humanities, to be gradually implemented at all levels starting from the 2025/26 school year. The assessment weight will change from 6 points to 4 points for each subject. The Visual Arts subject, initially 3 points, is suggested to be reduced to 2 points, while the Music subject's weight remains unchanged.
The EDB stated that it reviews and collects opinions on subjects' weights related to internal assessments and will announce the relevant arrangements in due course.
