The Secretary for Transport and Logistics, Lam Sai-hung, responded to a written question from a Legislative Council member, stating that the overall progress of the Central Kowloon Route, which connects West Kowloon and East Kowloon, is satisfactory. The structural works for most tunnels, connecting roads, and tunnel buildings have been completed, and the electrical and mechanical engineering works are entirely underway.
The remaining major works, including tunnel excavation between Ferry Street and Shanghai Street under the Gascoigne Road Flyover, are proceeding with measures to minimize the impact on local traffic, the environment, and residents. Due to the uncertainties of the underground environment, the engineering team is taking appropriate actions to overcome challenges and catch up with the schedule, aiming to open the route as planned in 2025, according to Lam.
Additionally, Lam mentioned that for future large-scale events at the Kai Tak Sports Park, the government will liaise closely with the sports park and public transport operators to prepare and deploy according to the scale of the events and participants' needs. Crowd dispersal will primarily rely on the mass transit system, and if necessary, railway services will be strengthened, and special bus services will be provided as a contingency.
Lam also noted that the Transport Department will continue to closely monitor the development of Kai Tak and adjust or enhance public transport services as needed to meet passenger demand.
According to planning, it is expected that around 1,000 private car parking spaces and about 70 coach parking spaces will be added in the district from now until next year to meet the parking needs, he added.
