Sponsored by the Simon Suen Foundation and co-organized by Jao Tsung-I Academy and Sun Museum, Hong Kong Emerging Artists Exhibition is unveiled on July 5, 2024. It showcases a total of 48 art pieces by six artists and will run from July 6, 2024, to November 3, 2024.

Hong Kong Emerging Artists Exhibition aims at providing a free platform for young Hong Kong artists to showcase their artistic direction and achievements to the general public. It inherits the philosophy of reviving Chinese culture from Professor Jao Tsung-i, Master of Chinese Studies, by encouraging participating artists to revitalize the spirit of Chinese art. The selection criteria for this exhibition include participants' creativity, mastery of techniques, and the embodiment of Chinese cultural and artistic elements in their works. After a comprehensive process of public recruitment, selection, and preparation, 6 exceptional Hong Kong artists under the age of 40 have been chosen to participate in the "Hong Kong Emerging Artists Exhibition". They are HO Wai Lam, William; CHEUNG Yung Ka; HUI Yuen Ying, Brenda; IP Kin Hang, Kenny; QIAN Yin Xiao, Silver; and DAI Ying, Daisy.

  • HO Wai Lam, William obtained a first-class honors degree from the Academy of Visual Arts of Hong Kong Baptist University and is now pursuing a Master of Philosophy degree. With solid foundation in traditional techniques, he incorporates calligraphy into a modern context, showcasing his unique calligraphy style. His style is to render each character independently in the cursive script, with minimal use of connecting strokes. This approach allows the audience to appreciate the distinct qualities of individual characters, while also appreciating the overall artistry of his calligraphic pieces.
  • CHEUNG Yung Ka graduated from the Taiwan Dayeh University in Plastic Art and obtained a master's degree in Ceramic Art from the Institute of Applied Arts of Tainan National University of the Arts. Cheung excels in utilizing stacking and repetitive ceramic techniques, creating dynamically elegant pieces that vividly illustrate the motifs of the passage of life and the development of memories. Ceramics are inherently rigid, yet Yung Ka has masterfully rendered them soft and supple, creating a striking contrast in texture.
  • HUI Yuen Ying, Brenda graduated from the Faculty of Education of The University of Hong Kong with a master's degree. She is a self-taught watercolor painter and birdwatcher, making records of birds all around the world through paintbrush. Combining vibrant and delicate watercolor strokes with elements of Chinese ink painting, she captures the beauty and grace of birds to demonstrate her extraordinary artistic talent and deep passion for nature. The birds in her paintings are not lifeless specimens. She skilfully employs calligraphic techniques, spattering ink on the birds' heads, wings and tails, transforming them from static forms into dynamic movements, imbuing them with vitality.
  • IP Kin Hang, Kenny graduated from Birmingham City University in Product Design. IP excels at depicting Hong Kong city and cultural landscapes using watercolours, seamlessly integrating elements of Hong Kong's urban culture, to create his unique visual language. He employs a rich, vibrant palette to suffuse the entirety of his canvases, amplifying the dynamic energy of Hong Kong's urban landscape and triggering nostalgic associations with the various iconic symbols that feature prominently in local streetscapes. The results are striking and distinctly his own.
  • QIAN Yin Xiao, Silver graduated from the Academy of Visual Arts of Hong Kong Baptist University and is currently a resident artist at the Jockey Club Creative Arts Centre. Qian's artworks combine abstract ink, traditional Chinese painting techniques, and modern elements, showcasing a new exploration of "micro-landscape" and injecting innovative vitality into traditional Chinese painting. In her animal series, she creates mountains and rocks using the lotus-leaf texture stroke and pairs them with charming, cartoon-style swan and frog, creating a new trend in Chinese painting.
  • DAI Ying, Daisy pursued studies and worked in the finance industry but remained deeply passionate about watercolour art. Dai captures the realism and poetics of Eastern natural landscapes with Western watercolour techniques, creating a unique fusion of Eastern and Western artistic styles. In her paintings, Daisy incorporates scenes of rivers, coastlines and roads with straight, horizontal and curved compositions, aiming to expand the audience's visual field beyond the confines of the frame and encouraging them to envision the extended spaces beyond.

Mr. Yeung Chun Tong, Director of Sun Museum said, "These six Hong Kong emerging artists demonstrate unique styles through different media, but they all share the spirit of perseverance in their pursuit of art. Their works vividly reflect the unique cultural landscape of Hong Kong, interpreting the city's multicultural features in innovative ways and highlighting the cultural splendor of Hong Kong as an international metropolis. "
