A delegation of 9 Hong Kong environmental experts has traveled to Sri Lanka today (July 1) to participate in the Symposium on Water Technology, Climate Change and Sustainable Development and the 9th China - Sri Lanka Joint Workshop on Climate Change and Marine Sustainable Development.

Dr. CHUI Ho-kwong, Samuel, the Director of EPD, expressed his anticipation for the trip, stating "I look forward to this opportunity to share Hong Kong's experiences with our Sri Lankan counterparts." Dr. Chui and the Hong Kong team will engage with professionals and scholars from Sri Lanka and the Chinese Academy of Sciences during the symposium. They will be discussing EPD's latest water quality modeling technologies and experiences, as well as the applications of smart technologies in water quality management.

"We hope to have in-depth exchanges with the local environmental protection staff to better understand their daily work and challenges," said Dr. Chui. "Together, we can explore potential solutions and provide technical advice to help develop new technologies, tools, or optimize workflows to address the challenges posed by climate change and improve our environmental conditions."

Regarding Hong Kong's experiences, Dr. Chui noted that the city has achieved notable success in water quality management through various scientific applications. He believes Sri Lankan authorities can reference Hong Kong's approaches, and then adapt and optimize them to suit the local context and needs.

As an example, Sri Lankan agencies could utilize the VISJET software developed by the Hong Kong expert team to simulate and analyze planned marine outfalls. This would assist in evaluating the feasibility of relevant projects and their potential environmental impacts, thereby enabling more effective wastewater infrastructure planning.

Other members of the Hong Kong delegation include:

Dr. YANG Rong, Assistant Director (Water Quality Management), EPD

Dr. CHIU Yuen-wang, Alex, Senior Environmental Protection Officer (Water Quality Management), EPD

Mr. TSANG Yau-fat, Raymond, Environmental Protection Inspector (Water Quality Management), EPD

Mr. LEUNG Hoi-yu, Matthew, Environmental Protection Inspector (Water Quality Management), EPD

Dr. NG Wai-yin, Jackie, Senior Environmental Protection Officer (Air Science and Modelling), EPD

Mr. CHOW Man Lung, Andrew, Senior Engineer (Hong Kong & Islands Region), Water Supplies Department
