Exclusive | 'Indigo Dyeing from the Blue': HK, mainland professors expound on ancient philosophy behind cultural heritage

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), in collaboration with Beijing Union University and Lanzhou Jiaotong University, has organized the exhibition "Indigo Dyeing from the Blue — The Silk Road Textile Dyeing Enters Hong Kong" and related workshops and guided tours.

Ranxie, the ancient Chinese art of dyeing silk fabrics, thrived along the Silk Road during the Han and Tang dynasties. Now, with the shared intangible cultural heritage of the Belt and Road countries and regions, Ranxie not only holds significant cultural value, but also symbolizes a strong people-to-people bond.

Professor Joanne Yip, Associate Dean of School of Fashion and Textiles, told us in an exclusive interview that the theme not only showcases the dyeing technique itself, but also symbolizes the potential for the younger generation to surpass the past achievement through diligence.

She also pointed out that the collaboration with the two mainland universities provides an opportunity to demonstrate both traditional and modern art styles to highlight the important value of China's intangible cultural heritage, as well as to enhance the understanding of Chinese culture among both Chinese and foreign students, and to promote cultural exchanges.

As an inheritor of "Ranxie", Professor Guan Lansheng of Beijing Union University said that "Ranxie" has a long history and holds profound social significance and cultural value.

He expressed great pride in being an inheritor of "Ranxie" and emphasized his responsibility to bring this ancient Chinese technique into modern life and the future.

However, due to the large-scale industrial production, traditional handicrafts have been facing significant challenges. It has become particularly important to help people understand, use, and appreciate these traditional techniques, he said.

How has the cultural heritage of Ranxie evolved through time while retaining its everlasting charm? Why would Professor Guan describe himself as "a descendant of Ancient Tomb Sect"? Watch the video now to find your answers!
