Opinion | The Gaza slaughter, a disaster for Israel and America

There is a disturbing difference between human beings and the untamed animal kingdom. In the human world, one man may cause the death of millions. Among animals in the wild, a rogue beast may endanger a herd, if that. There are no massacres among brutish animals. We thought, wrongly, that Hitler was a once-in-a-millennium monster. Now we know that he has been reincarnated as Bibi Netanyahu.

Stories coming out of Gaza are horrific and hellish; they are way beyond the pale of human decency. Israeli soldiers have gleefully bragged about beheading Palestinian babies. Little boys have been shot on sight, including a brother who rushed to rescue his fatally wounded younger sibling. Vital facilities, including schools, hospitals and aid centers are leveled. Food trickling in has been seized, stolen or trashed. Gaza is uninhabitable. The punishment for Hamas has turned into a killing frenzy of tens of thousands of women, children and newly-weds. In their unspeakable cruelty, Israelis have equaled or surpassed Nazis in atrocities. Israel may win the military conflict in the end, but it has forever condemned itself as an evil nation unworthy of human sympathy. The chosen people have turned the Star of David into a stinking stigma. This humanitarian crisis has claimed the US and its incumbent president as collateral damage, with American official spokesmen stammering out of both sides of their mouths. They are hypocrites and speak like shameless hypocrites. The US political landscape is now populated by opportunistic parasites whose only preoccupation is their own re-election.

The land of liberty and free speech is now the country of censorship. Universities used to be the sacred soil for freedom of expression. Now their presidents take their marching orders from their political masters in Congress. Everyone is out to save their own skin. America is a lost nation, without a moral compass. The only truth tellers are the poor, the powerless and unmoneyed students. Only bombs, missiles, gunboats and the almighty dollar have kept America relevant and feared, but no longer respected. When you control the world’s purse strings, you can set your own standards, including double standards. America has been disqualified as cocky self-righteous defenders of the world’s human rights. It has failed to protect the right to life of the two million starving Gazans. Don’t ever lie to us again about Xinjiang. One headless baby in Gaza outshouts an army of liars with megaphones baselessly blasting China on its far west province. Where is your conscience America? Where is your sense of outrage? Where is your fear of God? With Biden led by the nose by Bibi, he has lost the right to preach from the pulpit.

The disenchanted Gen Z has become the X-factor in the US election. The Gaza massacre has reshuffled the deck in the world’s moral leadership. No more pretenses. No more grandstanding. You are doomed by your action and inaction.

Not content with giving Israel an oversized fig leaf to cover its horrendous crimes, the US somehow still finds time to give a good country a bad name. China is an easy target for the China-hating habits of US politicians. Post-Trump, America has descended into a banana republic with nuclear bombs. It is no longer recognizable as the country of Abraham Lincoln.

It is not even the country of Richard Nixon where transgressions have leadership-altering consequences. Now it is the country where a convicted felon is worshipped as a cult leader who looks poised to reoccupy the White House. It is a madness that infects every level of its politics. Hitler would have felt perfectly at home in insane Israel, if not post-truth America.
