The University of Hong Kong (HKU) belongs to the city, not to any one individual, and the interests of the University must be given top priority in all matters, Chief Executive John Lee said in a press conference today (June 11).

According to Lee, the University has to improve continuously.

"If there are malpractices in the administration of the University, improvements have to be made; if there are long-term vacancies in important positions, they have to be filled; if there are unclear procedures, they have to be written down clearly; and the University's finances have to be made clear," he noted.

He also mentioned that since the Government's funding for universities is tens of billions of dollars a year, it must be used properly, and the University's administration and governance must meet the funding requirements.

Lee said he had met with the Chairman of the Council and Vice-Chancellor Zhang Xiang to coordinate communication, reminding them of the importance of communication and mutual coordination and reminding them that government funding is subject to requirements and that the interests of the University must be the primary consideration.

"I have told the Education Bureau to investigate the matter further and report back to me in time, and I will listen to the latest report later today before making a decision and announcement," said Lee.
