MTR Corporation announced today (June 8) that the first MTR electric bus has completed a series of tests and has officially commenced service. The bus operates on the K54 route, connecting Wo Kai Tin Estate, MTR Siu Hong Station, and Tuen Mun town center.
Compared to traditional diesel buses, the electric bus reduces carbon emissions by over 60% and operates more quietly. The thoughtful cabin design and more spacious seating also provide passengers with a more environmentally friendly and comfortable riding experience.
The electric bus is equipped with an energy regeneration braking system, which can recover some energy during braking to power onboard equipment, further enhancing battery efficiency.
Furthermore, as the bus utilizes an electric motor drive, it can reduce energy consumption from idling the diesel engine during frequent stops and starts, making it well-suited for the MTR's feeder bus routes.
MTR provides feeder bus services for the northwest New Territories, with an average daily ridership of over 160,000 passengers. Following the first electric bus's official launch, the company will expand its electric bus fleet, gradually replacing traditional diesel buses. The plan is to introduce over 30 electric buses and increase charging facilities by the end of 2026.
