This year, six Hong Kong universities have seen a noticeable rise in their rankings, according to the QS World University Rankings 2025 released today (June 5).
The University of Hong Kong has climbed to 17th place, while the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University have achieved their best historical rankings at 36th and 57th respectively.
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and City University of Hong Kong have also risen by 13 and 8 places respectively compared to last year. Meanwhile, Hong Kong Baptist University has made a remarkable leap of 43 places.
Analyzing the overall performance of Hong Kong universities, QS remarked that Hong Kong possesses one of the most internationalized higher education systems in the world and is also among the systems showing the greatest improvement.
The Education Bureau stated that it will continue to leverage the diversity and high degree of internationalization in Hong Kong's higher education sector to build Hong Kong into an international education hub and a cradle for future talent, actively attracting more non-local students to study in Hong Kong, thereby boosting Hong Kong's development momentum and contributing to national development.
Ben Sowter, QS Senior Vice President, noted that Hong Kong's higher education system performs excellently on a global scale. However, he also said that despite outstanding academic and research achievements, Hong Kong still faces challenges in improving graduate employment outcomes. "Balancing these successes with the rapidly changing economic and political environments will be crucial to maintaining Hong Kong's global standing," he added.
