The number of mega events that were supposed to be organized this year would now be increased from 150 to 210, representing an increase of more than 40%, which would attract about 1.7 million participants and bring in HK$7.2 billion in spending, Chief Executive John Lee said at a press conference today (May 21).

In the second half of the year, there will be 100 events, including the Hong Kong Performing Arts Expo and Fashion Design Week, he noted.

"The mega events in the second half of this year will bring greater economic benefits and create synergy with the various measures launched by the Central Authorities to support and benefit Hong Kong, which will increase the duty-free allowance for Mainland visitors and increase their purchasing desire," he said.

Also, to use the synergy between mega events, at least one event will take place every two days, and the increase in reception capacity will help magnify the economic benefits, which means that the city will welcome more long-haul visitors, according to Lee.
