The United States should immediately stop using the upcoming World Health Assembly to hype up the Taiwan question, continuing to indulge in separatist activities that support "Taiwan independence", said Chen Binhua, a spokesman for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council on Friday.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a recent statement that the United States strongly encourages the World Health Organization to reinstate Taiwan's invitation to this year's World Health Assembly set to open on May 27.

Chen said that Taiwan's involvement in events led by the WHO must align with the One-China principle, but Taiwan's ruling Democratic Progressive Party's relentless pursuit of "Taiwan independence" and rejection of the 1992 Consensus have undermined the political basis for the region's participation in WHO activities.

While urging the U.S. to stop using the World Health Assembly as an opportunity to intervene in the Taiwan problem, Chen also cautioned against DPP authorities' attempts of politicizing health issues and relying on external forces to seek "Taiwan independence".

Chen stressed that the mainland has always cared about the health and well-being of Taiwan compatriots.

He said that Chinese authorities have made proper arrangements regarding Taiwan's engagements in global health affairs, and there is an appropriate and feasible way for Taiwan to take part in the World Health Assembly while upholding the One-China principle.
