Situated beneath the well-known Mount Huangshan, the 900-year-old town of Hongcun has managed to hold onto its tranquil ambiance and unique Hui-style buildings, which are among the most significant examples of ancient Chinese architecture.

The magnificent residences, ancestral halls, and memorial arches were built during the Ming and Qing Dynasties (1368–1912), and they are easily recognized by their white walls and grey slate roofs. Its unique architectural design is portrayed in subdued hues and adorned with a plethora of elaborate sculptures.

One of the best examples is the Chengzhi Hall, which is open to the public today and was constructed in 1855 by a wealthy salt merchant. During construction, five kg of gold powder were utilized to make the magnificent windows, doors, and crossbeams that were visible to visitors.

Two massive trees atop Leigang Hill represent the animal's horns, while the hill itself represents the head of the settlement. Four bridges make up the legs, while a residential area makes up the body. Ponds and other internal streams are considered the village's organs.

Hongcun is renowned for its stunning views of the ocean in addition to its old residences. Moon Pond, a large artificial lake in the midst of the community, serves as its main attraction. The tranquil, mirror-like quality of the water creates a peaceful setting perfect for dreamy Instagram photos.

Chinese culture views the full moon as a symbol of prosperity. Why then wasn't the pond constructed that way? It is said that the half moon appears for a lengthier duration during the lunar cycle, despite the full moon's significance. By choosing the sturdy half-moon shape, the locals aimed to preserve the town's wealth.

Hongcun became well-known and well-liked after it was extensively featured in the Ang Lee-directed movie "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon". Tens of thousands of domestic and foreign tourists are enthralled by it every year.
