Since the opening of the MTR Disneyland Resort Line in 2005, it has been providing convenient and efficient railway services for the local community and tourists traveling to and from Hong Kong Disneyland.
MTR announced an asset renewal plan for the Disneyland Resort Line on April 11, which includes purchasing three new 4-car trains equipped with advanced battery-driven systems and replacing the signaling system. The new trains and new signaling system are targeted to be brought into operation in 2028.
The asset renewal project marks the introduction of trains with advanced battery-driven functions for MTR. The new trains can be powered to run without getting electricity from the overhead line upon charging and can also operate with power supplied from the existing overhead line. The relevant functions provide flexibility for MTR to design train operations in future.
The existing trains operating on the Disneyland Resort Line have adopted fully automatic operation. Both the exterior and interior design of the trains, as well as decorations, all feature Disney themes. MTR Corporation will once again work with Hong Kong Disneyland Resort on the design of the new trains, incorporating Disney-themed elements to create a magical journey for passengers.
MTR envisions that with the upgrade and renewal of train technology and design, the Disneyland Resort Line will serve passengers with a brand-new look after 2028.
The fleet of Disneyland Resort Line consists of three 4-car trains. The current trains were modified and upgraded from urban line trains (commonly known as M-trains), which were put into service in 1994-95. The signaling system of the Disneyland Resort Line has also been in use for nearly 20 years.
