Connie Talk EP13 | Marcella Cheung: Technology can make up for shortage of medical manpower in HK
Charity is never just a high-sounding term or some rich people's "hobby," but indeed, a way of living.
In this episode, we're glad to have with us Dr. Marcella Cheung, who is Director and General Manager of Wai Ka International Group Limited, Tsuen Wan District Council Member, and also Chairman of Yan Chai Hospital Board of Director.
As one of the six leading charitable organizations in HK, Yan Chai Hospital is renowned for its holistic approach and wide range of services. "Yan Chai is actually a platform that provides social services to a range of age population from newborn to elders," Dr. Cheung noted.
"We want to share some warmth and kindness and love to those people in need. So let them know that they're not forgotten by the society. They're not alone," she said.
Talking about her role as a DC Member, Dr. Cheung explained her obligation with a clever analogy. "Our role, I'll say, is kind of like a community ambassador. We represent local communities and we also act as a communication bridge between the local communities and the government."
Dr. Cheung simply couldn't hide her love and passion for this role. "Because I enjoy talking to people from the local communities. "They would come to me and share their views, their problems encountered in daily lives."
During the interview, she mentioned the shortage of medical personnel, a practical problem that has long plagued not only HK but also places around the globe.
"As population of HK residents are growing, the growth of medical staff is kind of not in proportion...So policies to close this gap must be implemented in the future." She suggested the use of machines to fill part of the gap and said that the application of machines could also promote education in this area among young people in HK, thereby achieving a real improvement to the present situation.
What does "charity" mean to Dr. Cheung? Where does the future of HK's healthcare lie? Watch the video for more!
