On March 16th, the China Sleep Research Society held a press conference in Beijing to announce the annual theme for World Sleep Day in China: "Healthy Sleep, Shared by Everyone." The "2024 Chinese Resident Sleep Health White Paper" was also released simultaneously.
According to the White Paper, on average, residents go to bed after midnight, and the duration of their nighttime sleep is generally short, averaging only 6.75 hours. The average number of nighttime awakenings is not high, at 1.4 times. The overall sleep score for residents is 75, indicating poor sleep quality and significant room for improvement.
It is worth noting that surveyed individuals born before the 1980s often experience problems like waking up at night or early in the morning and nocturia, while young people from the post-2000s and post-1990s generations have trouble falling asleep. Among university students, the survey shows that 56% of them use their smartphones for more than 8 hours per day, and 51% go to bed after midnight, with 19% of them even falling asleep after 2 am.
On non-working days, working professionals tend to have more sufficient nighttime sleep, enjoying an average of 33 minutes longer sleep time compared to workdays. Conversely, university students tend to have later bedtimes and waking times on non-working days compared to the working professionals. Vice Chairman Huang Zhili emphasized the need to enhance sleep education and cultivate healthy sleep habits.
The impact of sleep health on individuals and society cannot be underestimated. It should not be seen as something optional or easily sacrificed. On the contrary, adequate sleep is the cornerstone of maintaining good health. Share your duration of sleep with us in the comments below.
