To raise public awareness of road safety, the Hong Kong Police Force (HKPF) will launch a large-scale enforcement campaign against driving offenses and jaywalking from today (March 18).
Citizens are liable to a fine of HK$2,000 on conviction for jaywalking.
Last week, the police announced that they would launch a territory-wide enforcement campaign starting today to crack down on illegal driving behaviors, including careless driving, failing to yield to pedestrians on zebra crossings, speeding, driving with a mobile phone in hand, driving under the influence of alcohol and narcotics, as well as violating traffic signals and markings, etc.
"The police will also crack down on pedestrians who do not comply with traffic signals and cross roads indiscriminately in a bid to minimize the chances of traffic accidents," the police said.
The police hope that people can develop a good habit of crossing roads law-abidingly to protect precious lives.
According to police figures, there were 1,009 fatal and serious traffic accidents in Hong Kong last year, of which 322 were caused by inattentive driving, representing a year-on-year increase of more than 20%.
