Sun Museum, in collaboration with the Labour and Welfare Bureau, Social Welfare Department, and the Arts Development Fund for Persons with Disabilities, organized a special exhibition entitled "Infinite Creativity in Art" from Jan. 12 to March 16, 2024.
The exhibitors are persons with different disabilities including those with intellectual disabilities, visual impairment, hearing impairment, physical disabilities, autism, attention-deficit / hyperactivity disorder, and mental health needs. Despite facing different challenges, they have all shown courage and perseverance in overcoming difficulties. With the support and care from various parties, they resolutely develop their artistic potential.
The exhibition features a wide range of artworks, including sketches, watercolor, acrylic, poster color and ink paintings, as well as three-dimensional creations such as pottery, wire sculptures, and paper art. Handicrafts such as weaving, rattan weaving, woodwork, mosaics, and leatherwork are also showcased. There are individual as well as collaborative creations.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Chris Sun, Secretary for Labour and Welfare, expresses concern for the well-being of physically or mentally challenged people. "Hopefully one day we can bring these works to the world stage to showcase the talents of these artists," he said.
Dr. Chloe Sun, Chair of the Simon Suen Foundation, hoped that the exhibition will help people cultivate artistic sensibilities, add color to the world, and bring beauty and happiness to all.
Mr. Yeung Chun-Tong, Director of Sun Museum, stated that people with disabilities have considerable talent in the arts. "Ancient people with eccentric personalities often had amazing artistic achievements... with welfare and medical improvements in modern times, they may have gone even further."
The exhibition showcases artworks created by around 200 individuals with disabilities from 17 charitable organizations in Hong Kong. They include Ebenezer School and Home for the Visually Impaired Limited, Tung Wah Group of Hospitals, Po Leung Kuk, The Mental Health Association of Hong Kong, Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong, Caritas – Hong Kong, Hong Kong Federation of Handicapped Youth, Hong Kong Lutheran Social Service, Lutheran Church - Hong Kong Synod, SAHK, Evangelical Lutheran Church Social Service - Hong Kong, Wai Ji Christian Service, Yang Memorial Methodist Social Service, New Life Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association, St. James' Settlement, The Neighbourhood Advice-Action Council, Lok Chi Association Limited, The Intellectually Disabled Education and Advocacy League Limited.
Although these artists are all physically or mentally challenged to some extent, their ideas can still be presented in the form of artwork. With the help of the government, welfare organizations and the Sun Museum, it has become possible for them to express themselves.
