The Secretary for Transport and Logistics, Lam Sai-hung, has expressed grave concern over the cancellation of Cathay Pacific Airways' flights during the Christmas holidays and New Year holidays due to the absence of pilots.
He said on social media platforms today (Jan. 8) that he had urged Cathay Pacific to explain to affected passengers as soon as possible the relevant arrangements after the flight consolidation, to provide appropriate support and assistance, and to take proper aftercare measures, such as arranging for affected passengers to be transferred to other flights or other airlines, so as to minimize the impact on passengers.
Lam mentioned that Cathay Pacific would be canceling some of its January and February flights to ensure that most of its remaining flights would have sufficient manpower to operate.
He said that as Hong Kong's aviation industry is moving towards full recovery, local airlines need to increase capacity to meet demand while at the same time taking responsibility for flight scheduling and staffing arrangements.
He has asked Cathay Pacific to critically review its flight scheduling and staffing arrangements to ensure that it provides a stable and reliable service to passengers. At the same time, the airline should make good plans and deploy resources flexibly to deal with any unforeseen circumstances, according to Lam.
